Steps to Certification

1. Meet Work Experience Requirements

• Two years of verifiable coatings‑related work experience
• Review the accepted work experience criteria before applying

2. Enroll and Complete Course Requirements

• Complete the full CIP Level 2 course
• Complete the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course (or an approved equivalent)

3. Meet Certification Requirements

• Hold an active Basic Coatings Inspector Certification
• Submit an approved Certified Coatings Inspector application through the online portal

4. Take Required Exams

• Certified Coatings Inspector Practical Exam Administered in the classroom as part of the CIP Level 2 course
• Certified Coatings Inspector Theory Exam (CIP Level 2) Scheduled through Pearson VUE and delivered via computer‑based testing

Renewal

Certified inspectors can manage work experience and Professional Development Hours (PDHs) through the Certification Portal. Logging PDHs throughout the year simplifies the renewal process and ensures all requirements are ready when it’s time to submit.
